Matrix Shafts and the HD Design

Matrix Golf has four highly popular shaft models that use hexadecagonal (HD) structural design: Matrix Radix, Matrix Program, Matrix HD, and Matrix TP HD. But what exactly does that mean?

Most shafts are manufactured using a circular design. The Matrix HD shafts user a 16-sided structure instead. The goal is to strengthen the tip section, without adding overall weight. But overall the thing that you will notice first about any Matrix HD shaft is the consistency.  If you’re hitting the club the same way, you will get the same results.  Lower quality shafts cannot make this claim, as they don’t always snap back into the same position.

But what are the differences between the Radix, the HD, and the TPHD? The first thing that jumps out at you is quality. The old story holds true, “You get what you pay for.” The Radix, being the lowest price of the three is the lowest quality of the three HD shafts.  However, that doesn’t make it a bad shaft. It will spin a lot more then the others and will have less roll, but it will still be a consistent shaft. The Matrix HD will have significantly less spin and therefore more roll, and the TPHD (being one of the lowest spin shafts on the market) will give you the best roll you can get out of a shaft.

But is it really worth $1000+ dollars?  Well, let’s look at what the TPHD shaft will do for you:

  • Guaranteed more roll then any other shaft on the market
  • Higher Ball Speed then you’re used to
  • Piercing, tour type ball flight
  • More consistency then you have ever experienced before
  • The highest in accuracy, and the highest in distance rolled into one shaft

So, the final decision becomes yours to make. But, we can say one thing.  We’ve had people complain about shaft performance for other brands, but never once has anybody complained about any of the HD designed shafts. On the contrary, we’ve heard nothing but great review.

Krank wins the 2011 ReMax Realtec Long Drive Championship

Carl Wolter won the 2011 Re-Max Realtec Long Drive Championship on Sunday November 6th, 2011 by smashing a 450 yarder to take Jamie Sadlowski out of the game. But what was he using? Carl was using a Krank Rage Black Long Driver with a Fujikura Firewire shaft. Krank continues to give themselves a name in the Long Drive industry by continuing their run of taking championships.

But what is so special about what the Krank driver Carl was using? The Krank Rage Black Driver is designed to be super fast and super stable.  It’s the same volume as any other leading Long Driver, but it feels lighter.  With the Fujikura Firewire shaft built specifically for the Krank Rage Long Driver, you are guaranteed a piercing flight with roll after the last bounce.

Our Custom Fit Team

Not sure what you’re looking for?  Have an idea what you’re looking for, but are worried you won’t buy a club that fits you and you’ll be stuck with it?  Give us a call at 888-462-2064, and one of our custom fit representatives will walk you through the custom fit process over the phone.  We will ask you a series of questions, and use that to determine what type of club you need, and what type of shaft you will need with it.  The more information you can give us, the better we’ll be able to fit you.  However, we can successfully pick out something for you simply based on what you’re currently using, and what you hope to achieve out of a new club.

But, to make life a little easier for both of us, it helps if you can provide information such as swing speed, trajectory, exactly what you are using now (including weight and flex of shaft, and loft of driver), etc. We will use that information in determining what to fit for you. Our representatives have doing this process over the phone for years, and are very good at what they do.

Truly Custom Golf Clubs

At 300yards.com we offer truly custom built golf clubs.  A lot of manufacturers claim to offer complete customization, but we really strive to achieve it. You can see for yourself at 300yards.com when you go to any product that we offer a wide variety of custom shafts with every selection.  As stated before in a previous blog, we offer customization with the TaylorMade R11.  However, it doesn’t stop there.

But, we did promise complete customization, and we mean it.  If you don’t see the shaft you want in our dropdown, then all you have to do is give us a call.  Tell us what shaft you want, we’ll get the pricing for it, and then we’ll sell it to you with any golf shaft you can possibly think of. We also offer spine frequency, and FLO alignment for an additional fee.  When we say custom golf clubs, we mean it.

TaylorMade continues to out sell

With the release of the TaylorMade R11, TaylorMade has remained one of the top manufacturers of golf clubs on the market.  They never seem to go wrong when releasing a new model. However, TaylorMade has changed their methodology a hair with this new release.  The R11 comes with some features that TaylorMade hasn’t really delved in yet so far.  Building on what they started with the R9, the R11 offers 100 yards of side to side trajectory with a completely adjustable face angle.  Launch angle and an adjustable sole makes the R11 one of the most adaptable drivers on the market.

You can purchase the R11 stock with a Fujikura Blur shaft (in both the tour and the standard models), but with the interchangeable shafts, it’s almost a crime not go with some other shaft options.  So far, we’ve found the best fit for the R11 to be with a Matrix HD shaft in place of the Blur.  We find that the consistency the HD design in the HD shaft provides partnered up with the adaptability of the R11 head is the perfect setup for almost any golfer.  The mid level launch with the Matrix HD6 is perfect for the R11 as that gives you all the room you need to adjust the face angle to the perfect launch for you while adjusting the head itself.

Spine Alignment/Flowing

We get a lot of customers asking why bother with a premium assembly, what are the benefits. Basically, there are three ways to assemble a golf club. Basic assembly, advanced assembly, premium assembly. The purpose is to increase the consistency of your clubs, by forcing them to snap back into the same spot with every swing.

Basic Assembly:
Nothing special here; this is basically glue the pieces together and away you go. Some shaft designers will put the stickers on the side of the spline, which indicates to that club-builder to put that side forward (harrison for example does this), but it will only get it in the general area.  However, this does not mean that it is built improperly or inefficiently.

Advanced Assembly:
Advanced Assembly, or spine alignment is a process where the shaft is rolled to find the spine (or stiffest side of the shaft).  It’s then installed with the spine forward by a degree.  It is important to know that lots of club-builders will install the spine at a different degree (12:00, 9:00, etc.). The point of this is to achieve consistency amongst your whole set, so it’s best to stick with one club-builder and not branch out.  If you do branch out, you may want to request the specifics from your builder before doing so.

Premium Assembly:
Premium Assembly, or FLO alignment is a process where the shaft is put on a table and rolled with a laser along the edge.  This is the most accurate measure of finding the spine, and is considered to be the best possible method for assembling a club.

So why bother? As stated above, you will get consistency with every club. This will improve your overall performance, even if you do not realize it right away. However, just because your irons are not assembled with the spine forward, does not mean you shouldn’t also do the same with your driver when you buy it.  Keep in mind that every iron will most likely be aligned slightly off from the others, so getting your driver aligned properly will not hurt anything.  And, then you will get the added consistency with your driver as well. Since your driver will now snap back to the same spot with every swing, you will have increased accuracy and consistency.

Get Custom Fit

We’re currently working on a custom fit program that can be found on our site’s Custom Fit page. The purpose of this program is to get you fit to the club(s) of your choice by using your current setup, and some of your statistics.  The more you know about your swing, the more accurate the results will be. We’ve spent a lot of man hours putting this together and are very excited for it’s up and coming release.

There are other custom fit programs online, but we’re trying to make this one a little bit differently.  Our goal is to include our entire product line in the consideration, from the top of the line down to the economy variety. Custom Golf Clubs do not have to be something purchased in person anymore.

How does it work?
First you tell us what you are looking for.  Iron, driver, fairway wood, shaft, etc. Then we ask you a little bit about what you’re using now.  This helps us judge a good recommendation for you.  Then we ask about some statistics.  Swing speed, trajectory, consistency, etc. We start with what you’re currently using as a baseline, and then either suggest a club to fix a slice/hook, or suggest an upgrade.  The first few suggestions are computer generated, however if you then leave us a way to contact you after you submit the form, we will have one of our specialists go over your information and then personally custom fit you.
